Hooked on Music (http://www.hooked-on-music.de), 2010-12-06

"Der Schweden-Fünfer versteht es durchaus gekonnt, den Groove und das Feeling der 70er Jahre gekonnt in ihre Songs einfliessen zu lassen, ohne als plumpe Plagiatshanseln geächtet zu werden. HION MARTELL schaffen es jedenfalls, ihren Songs, "inspiriert" durch wen auch immer, kurzweiligen und wie bei In the Meadows durchaus auch mal eigenen Charakter angedeihen zu lassen. "

"Beer Drinking Southern Rock", this is how these Swedes describe their by now 7th album "Cure Any Disease", which - charmingly and cheekily - seems to have travelled in time, back to the 70s. Long Distance Love and Any Disease - with Christer Nilsson's lead vocals and the charming, intoxicating female background vocals - create associations of having dug up a long forgotten recording of the "Bat Out of Hell" sessions. Built as a boxer is slightly flirting with T.REX, with its distorted guitar sounds, Fed up suggests that not only Status Quo were on a quest for the Fourth Chord! (Dont cry) Mary Anne starts of quite stirringly thanks to Christer Nilsson's vocals, and develops to a radio compatible midtempo song, while the Hammon organ is wallowing in pleasure and Tanja Hedlund's voice is creating delightful highlights. This Swedish quintet knows how to incorporate the groove and feeling of the 70's into their songs skillfully, without being outlawed as clumsy rip-offs. HION MARTELL manages to keep its own entertaining characteristics in its songs, regardless whether 'inspired' by somebody or not, as e.g. In the Meadows. And last but not least they finish the album off sunshiny with the genuine, Southern Rock soaked song, Beer Drinking Musik!

"HION MARTELL ist eine kleine Band mit kleinem Budget und viel Herz. Neben all den aufgeblasenen Angeberproduktionen, die uns tagtäglich erreichen, erscheint "Will Cure Any Disease" zwar beinahe wie Aschenputtel, aber dieses kleine Luder hatte es bekanntlich faustdick hinter den Ohren. Wegen solchen Bands gibt es Magazine wie uns. Tack så mycket. "

Mario's Metal Mania (http://www.mariosmetalmania.com), January 2011

"The second track, which is “Built As A Boxer”, reminds, because of it's riff, a bit of T-REX's “Get It On”. On the boogie woogie rocker “Built As A Boxer” you can indeed hear they are influenced by STATUS QUO. And “Don't Mess” is even a mixture of THE ROLLING STONES and the QUO, with vocals sounding like Mick Jagger. “Wasting Time” sounds nice and reminds me of JET. The vocals on “Brand New Day” reminds me of IGGY POP"

"A few tracks certainly deserves again listenings, and I would recomand a second tune " Built As A Boxer" , and 9th, Stones influental song " Don' t Mess". " Will Cure Any Disease", if you prefer older rock tendencies, transfered in modern rock and also productional way, could be a favourable album for your taste, in any other cases musical offering of Swedish fellows will not take your soul...."

Es ist den Schweden allemal zu gönnen, dass sich für ihre Mucke ein Publikum findet. Einen Fan mehr, der hier wohl verdiente fünf Punkte raus rückt, haben sie auf jeden Fall gerade dazu gewonnen. "

English translation:

"The career of Hion Martell, a band of five members, led by guitar player, singer and songwriter Christer Nilsson started in the beginning of the 90's in a small Swedish town called Ljusdal. In the beginning the band did covers of mainly Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. Later on they advanced from being a tribute band and formed their own musical style. Due to their popularity they have in the past been playing at Northern-European music festivals. Besides several concerts new Hion Martell albums has appeared, the latest being released last year. This album contains 12 songs, all produced by the members of the band. Half of the songs are written by the leader of the band, the rest is the product of joint contribution. The album begins with the few seconds long intro, Perfect Remedy, which is, rather surprisingly, sung by female vocalists. In the following songs (Built as a Boxer, Fed up and Wasting Time) the guys gets really warmed up and the result are three very dynamic songs. These are followed by two lyrical songs [(Don't Cry) Mary Anne and Long Distance Love], which provide a perfect opportunity for some melancholy. The song Any Disease brings us back to the energetic flow. The intense high energy atmosphere is cooled down a bit by songs such as Brand New Day and In the Meadows. The last two songs of the album are the fiery 7 Devils and B.D.M. (Beer Drinking Music). The Will Cure My Disease album is enjoyable even to those who are not rock fans, because the songs are easy to connect to and we can hear real instruments playing, without any computerized tricks."

"Love the Kiss like 'Wasting Time' and 'Brand New Day' that reminds me of Thin Lizzy in a funny kinda way - as it's light sounding almost and very warmly vibed. It's into Quo style for 'Don't Mess' and B.D.M.(Beer Drinking Music) and into the funk for 'Devils'. 'In The Meadows' is a real nice tune that is a bit like Hard Luck Woman by Kiss in parts."
